In the manufacturing industry, minor scratches on the product surface are a common problem, which not only affect the appearance quality of the product, but also may reduce the functional performance of the product. Therefore, how to accurately and efficiently detect these minor scratches becomes a key link in the production process. Machine vision technology, as a technology that simulates the visual perception ability of the human eye, provides strong support for surface scratch detection by realizing image acquisition, processing and analysis through computers and cameras and other devices. Among them, machine vision light source as an important part of image acquisition, its performance directly determines the accuracy and reliability of the detection results.

Machine vision light source requirements:

1. Light source uniformity

The uniformity of the light source is an important factor in ensuring image quality. In surface scratch detection, the light source needs to keep the standard deviation of the gray value as small as possible within the effective irradiation range to ensure that every detail in the image can be clearly and unobstructed. In this way, even very small scratches can be accurately visualized in the image.

2. Spectral range and light intensity

The machine vision light source needs to have a wide spectral range to accommodate the inspection of different materials. At the same time, the light intensity should be high enough to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and facilitate subsequent image processing. Sufficient light intensity also ensures that scratch details are more prominent in the image, reducing the possibility of misjudgment and missed judgments.

3. Stability and lifetime

The stability and lifetime of the light source is critical for long running machine vision systems. A stable light source maintains consistent illumination over a long period of time and avoids image quality degradation due to aging or fluctuation of the light source. A longer life reduces the frequency of light source replacement and lowers maintenance costs.

4. No shadows

In surface scratch detection, no shadow is one of the basic requirements of the light source. Shadows may hide the details of the scratch, resulting in biased detection results. Therefore, the machine vision light source needs to use reasonable illumination methods and optics, such as diffuse reflector plates and mirrors, to eliminate shadows and ensure that the scratch details are clearly visible in the image.

Choosing the right type of light source and lighting scheme can ensure clear image quality and no blocking of shadow areas, thus improving the accuracy and reliability of the inspection.
