In industrial vision inspection, the lens directly affects image quality and inspection efficiency. Many people confuse ZOOM LENSES with Vari-focal lenses because both can change the focal length and adjust the field of view. However, in practical use, their performance and suitable applications differ.

What is a ZOOM LENS?

ZOOM LENSes can change their focal length to achieve different magnification levels. For example, they allow users to switch from a wider field of view to a narrower one to inspect finer defects or dimensions. A key characteristic of these lenses is that the position of the image plane may change during the zoom process, causing the image focus to shift; therefore, refocusing is typically required. In other words, after changing the magnification, users often need to readjust the focus to obtain a clear image.

This type of lens has a relatively simple structure and is commonly used for inspection tasks involving multiple product varieties, small batches, and infrequent switching between items. Examples include offline spot checks, dimensional measurements, and visual inspections. Operators can first select the magnification and then slowly adjust the focus, making it suitable for applications where real-time performance is not a high priority.

What are Vari-focal lenses?

Vari-focal lenses can also change their focal length, but they place greater emphasis on “focus stability.” Focus stability refers to the ability—provided the lens is well-designed and calibrated—to maintain a consistent focal point as the user continuously adjusts the magnification within the zoom range, ensuring the image remains consistently sharp without the need for repeated refocusing. This results in smoother operation and greater efficiency when observing moving targets or quickly switching fields of view.

In industrial vision inspection, Vari-focal lenses are commonly used in scenarios requiring continuous observation, rapid positioning, or in-line inspection. Examples include product inspection on assembly lines, microscopy systems, dynamic process recording, and quality checks involving rapid magnification changes. They allow operators to adjust magnification without interrupting their observation.

The Key Differences Between the Two

1. Differences in focus stability. ZOOM LENSES may require refocusing after changing magnification; Vari-focal lenses are designed to maintain focus stability during zooming, eliminating the need for repeated adjustments.

2. Differences in user experience. ZOOM LENSES rely more on manual compensation; Vari-focal lenses are better suited for continuous, rapid operation.

3. Differences in application focus. ZOOM LENSES are suitable for static, offline use and switching between multiple fields of view; Vari-focal lenses are suitable for dynamic, online use and rapid observation.
